The Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN) was formed in 1991 and has reported extensively on armed conflict, politics, the environment and drug issues across Shan State. Starting in 2003, SHAN has produced a number of in-depth reports on the impact of drugs across Shan State and the relationship between drugs and armed conflict. Since 2012 the organisation has focused on engaging with the peace process in Myanmar. The drug economy has become a cross-cutting issue and impacts upon all five areas of dialogue within the peace process: political, security, social, economic and land and natural resource management.
SHAN continues to work as an independent media organisation dedicated to supporting peace and improving understandings of the challenges facing people’s livelihoods and the impact of drugs on communities.
